The technology developed by the Romanian R&D institution refers to the production of propagating material in containerised system and to the establishment and maintenance of intensive plantations of grafted cherry on vegetative root-stocks.
The biological material was represented by Romanian cherry varieties ( Maria, Gelu, Daria, Severin) and foreign cherry varieties (Skeena, Cordia, Regina), grafted on to the vegetative root-stock Gisela 5, and IPC – 7, Romanian vegetative root-stock.
The cherry plantations are super-intensive (1250 trees/ha), with application of intensive production technologies.
The canopy forms was Spindle bush and Tessa.
The research institute is seeking growers in Europe and overseas to customise the system further under technical cooperation, as well as offering an early version of the solution to cherry growers under commercial agreements with technical assistance.
Advantages & innovations
The growth of propagating material in containers, in protected spaces, reduces by one year the time for production of grafted cherry trees. The percentage of growth for grafted trees in containers, in protected spaces, is much higher than the grafted trees in open field.
According to the biological parameters determined, at least 3 years after planting, there are no phenomena of incompatibility between varieties and root-stocks.
The Gisela 5 root-stock determines precocious fruit for the cherry trees higher than the CPI -7 root-stock.
