Summary

A Spanish biotech company developed unique microfabrication technique and flow simulation for the development of customised microfluidic devices applied to biomedical applications. The company looks for pharma/contract research organisation that conducts preclinical tests in drug discovery interested in using this technology to reduce time-to-market and costs. The partnership would lead to a development of a specific microfluidic device and licence agreement for its commercial exploitation.

Description

Microfluidic solutions are promising technologies with relevant effects in all the scientific fields, being biomedicine the most affected by this disruptive technology. This is mainly caused by the need of optimization in processes and in the relationship between the microfluidic dynamics and the biological structural and physical mechanisms.Advantages of microfluidic technologies are based on the particular physical conditions due to the decreased ratio between volume and viscosity. This ratio allows to precisely control the linear flow and to avoid diffusion, being possible to perform reproducible and simplified manipulation of liquid samples. Based on this physical properties, microfluidic devices allow to optimize biomedical solutions by: - Using of a minimum quantity of sample. - Decreasing processing and analysing times. - Mimicking of physiological conditions and precise control of chemical/biological processes. Microfabrication techniques are needed to develop microchannels that allow implementing the advantages related with the physical conditions in microfluidic devices. In this sense, the technology developed by the Spanish biotech company offers a unique combination of advanced microfabrication techniques and flow simulations for the development of the most innovative microfluidic devices applied to biomedical applications. Their work methodology and the resources employed combining different manufacture techniques (laser, additive manufacturing, micro-milling, etc), explain their ability to manufacture the devices fully on demand and customized for the end user. The devices are biocompatible and suitable for long-term cell culture under controlled flow conditions. The company would like to find pharma companies or contract research organisations that conduct preclinical tests in drug discovery interested in incorporating this microfluidic technology to reduce time-to-market and costs under a licence agreement for its commercial exploitation.
