Summary

A Slovenian research organization has developed a method for determination of radiation hardness of electronics/materials against neutron and gamma irradiation. All electronics are affected by the radiation including housing, screws, gaskets, etc. The method provides qualitative and quantitative assessment of the radiation hardness and the lifetime of the equipment exposed to radiation. Partners from the nuclear and medical sectors are sought for commercial agreements with technical assistance.

Description

In harshest environments like nuclear power plants, containment and spent fuel storage areas, and other nuclear, medical facilities, accelarators where ionizing radiation is present, the equipment used must be evaluated concerning radiation hardness.
While the reliable operation of any equipment in such environments is most critical, the lifetime of the equipment may be severely affected by gamma or neutron irradiation.
All electronics are affected by radiation including housing, screws, gaskets, coatings, connectors, wires, etc.

A Slovenian public research organization with a 60-year tradition in operating nuclear reactors has developed a method for determination of radiation hardness of electronics/materials against neutron and gamma irradiation.

The technology developed provides estimating the radiation hardness of the components, maximum allowed irradiation dose, estimating the lifetime of the devices and components and testing of specific materials for protection against irradiation.

The researchers have years of experience in operating nuclear reactors. They have the technology and knowledge to perform the testing under harsh environmental conditions inside the nuclear reactor.
Partners are sought among nuclear plant operators and manufacturers of the equipment in nuclear and medical applications, exposed to gamma or neutron radiation for testing their equipment under commercial agreements with technical assistance.

Advantages & innovations

The technology can be used before the live operation, during research, development or production of the equipment. Life expectancy can be estimated in advance before installation into harsh environment.

Stage of development

Already on the market

Partner sought

Nuclear plant operators and manufacturers of the equipment in nuclear and medical applications, exposed to gamma or neutron radiation for testing their equipment are sought. The foreseen cooperation would be in a form of commercial agreements with technical assistance.
