Established Slovak research institute of one of the Slovak universities has developed the device for machinery sector. Nowadays, three-jaw chucks are most often used on lathes for clamping workpieces. They are universal clamping jigs for clamping rotating (cylindrical) workpieces. The three jaws of the chuck are replaceable and take a relatively short time to replace. It is not possible to clamp a square workpiece (e.g. a square rod) into a three-jaw chuck with standard jaws. In this case, it is necessary to replace the three-jaw chuck with a four-jaw chuck. This exchange is much more demanding: both in time and physically. The design of the jaws for clamping a square cross-section in a three-jaw chuck makes it possible to clamp workpieces with a square cross-section in a three-jaw chuck. It is not necessary to replace the entire chuck. Only its jaws need to be replaced. The industrial applicability of the construction of these jaws is in engineering companies that deal with the production (especially machining) of mechanical components. The institute is seeking an industrial partner for licensing for the further development and commercionalization of this technology.
Advantages & innovations
The advantages of the construction of jaws for clamping a square cross-section in a three-jaw chuck are:
• The workpiece with square cross section can be clamped in a three-jaw chuck.
• One three-jaw chuck is enough to clamp both rotary and square workpieces (financial savings, fewer fixtures).
• Replacing the jaws is several times less time-consuming and physically demanding than replacing the entire chuck (saving time, less work).
